Jonathan Ching obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1991 before pursuing his interest in painting at the University of Philippines, majoring in Fine Arts. He is one of the founding members of the now-defunct arts collective Surrounded By Water, which counted amongst its members, Geraldine Javier, Yasmin Sison, Mariano Ching, Wire Tuazon, Kieye Miranda, Lena Cobangbang, Louie Cordero and many others.
